holding any discussions on its budget deficit. this weekend. council members held a special meeting friday to address the $177 million deficit. proposals include freezing job vacancies at the police department and fire departments, which would potentially close 4 or 5 stations. city officials say there is no deadline to pass a mid-cycle budget. the next discussion on this will be on tuesday. new at ten hayward police are investigating a shooting that sentwo teens to the hospital, and one remains on life suppo tonht, police say. reports of a shooting came in around 11 p.m. thursday night the area of mission and industrial boulevards were told a 17 year old boy called 911, saying that he and his 18 year old friend had been shot. police found the two boys on west tennyson road near lusg court. the 17 year old has since been released from a hospital, but the 18 year old remains on life support. no arrests have been made. a newborn infant is reportedly safe tonight after being abducted by his birth mother, palaeo. police say braxton manning, who was just 14

days old, was abducted sometime on thursday. his mother, 28 year old valerie manning, was named the suspect, with police calling this a case of parental abduction. an amber alert was issued just after 3 a.m. this morning, but then canceled at about 230 this afternoon. vallejo police said the mother and baby were found but did not give details on their condition. turning now to our weather, a live look outside at the golden gate bridge and it was a warm one. today it's only going to get much hotter in the days ahead. in fact, a heat wave is upon us. let's bring in ktvu meteorologist roberto gonzalez with a look at what's in store. >> christina, this heat wave really concerns me. and the reason is it's the first prolonged heat wave we will be experiencing this year. i mean, a couple of weeks ago, we had 100 degrees inland for about a day or so. this is going to go on until monday, july 8th. wow, that's a long time. it's going to take a toll on our bodies, our pets, everything around the bay area. and it's not only our inland areas that's going to

feel the heat, it's the entire bay area, in fact, where you see the maroon shade. that's where we have the heat watch that goes into effect on tuesday morning. the red highlighted area is a heat warning, and that goes into effect on tuesday morning as well. so mainly northern california is going to bear the brunt from this impending heat wave. and with this heat, watch what you can anticipate from tuesday through friday. and i got to tell you, i do believe this is going to be extended well into the weekend as well. but we will be experiencing the north northwest winds 10 to 20mph, gusts up to 30. it's going to dry out the atmosphere. the relative humidity is going to go down between five and 15. and the driest location. and when that happens, the elevation of fire danger does go up. now. meanwhile, the hottest temperatures will be on wednesday. that's what all the computer models are pointing to, antioch at 109 degrees. so you know, somebody's backyard is going to hit 110. cloverdale to the north, 108 livermore, 106 los gatos in the south. bay 104. and along the peninsula. redwood

the west coast. tonight we take a look back at his time with the giants and the legacy he leaves both on and off the field. orlando cepeda arrived in san francisco the year the giants arrived from new york, 1958. but before cepeda became one of the most feared hitters in the entire game of baseball, he was a fresh faced teenager from puerto rico, assigned to a minor league team in segregated salem, virginia. >> i knew that coming to the state is going to be hard, you know, being black and latin, but to see it with my eyes was going to confuse. >> what was not confusing, for cepeda was hitting a baseball. in fact, it was in his dna. his father, pedro, known as the bull, was widely considered the babe ruth of puerto rico. so three years after leaving his homeland as a 17 year old, the baby bull, as cepeda would soon be called, worked his way

through the minor leagues and burst onto the scene, with the giants making an immediate impact as a 20 year old, cepeda earned unanimous national league rookie of the year honors and just three years later, in 1961, he hit 46 home runs and had an astounding 142 runs batted in, becoming the first latin player to lead the majors in both categories. sabina. >> sabina cepeda had a talent for baseball on the field and a zest for life off of it, immersing himself in the san francisco latin jazz scene, even bringing his record player into the clubhouse. >> leading teammate johnny antonelli to give him his other nickname. >> you just say chee chee chee cha cha cha cha cha cha cha cha cha cha cha cha cha. >> cepeda's. gregarious nature made him a fan favorite, one of the most popular giants, which is saying a lot on a team with two willie mays and mccovey. but

cepeda was playing on bad knees, so when manager herman franks moved him from first base to the outfield in 1966, in order to get willie mack more at bats, it simply didn't work. 19 games into that season. after eight plus years in san francisco, the giants traded cepeda to the saint louis cardinals for pitcher ray sadecki. glenn dickey covered the giants for the san francisco chronicle. at that time, i think that was probably the most unpopular trade that the giants made in the time i was, i was covering him. >> people just hated it because they loved orlando in cepeda's first full season in saint louis, he led them to the world series championship and was named the unanimous national league's most valuable player. >> cepeda played another six seasons with four different teams, including a very brief three at bat stop with the oakland a's before hanging up his cleats for good in 1974, just a year after retiring,

cepeda found himself in serious trouble with the law, busted for smuggling marijuana into puerto rico from colombia. cepeda would be sentenced to five years in federal prison, of which he would serve 11 months. his conviction badly damaged his reputation in his native land. >> no no no no no no no no no. >> but out of the darkness came light. not long after his release from prison, cepeda discovered his spiritual savior, buddhism. >> the best thing that happened to me when i got in trouble in puerto rico with the law 20 years ago. it wasn't for that i wouldn't be practicing buddhism. >> cepeda would soon become a goodwill ambassador for the giants and work with at risk kids to bring awareness to the dangers of drug and alcohol use, never let obstacles stop you of what you have in mind. 25 years after his last major league at bat, cepeda was bestowed baseball's highest honor a

veteran selection for enshrinement into the baseball hall of fame at cooperstown. >> through baseball. i escaped from puerto rico. i escaped poverty through baseball. i built a name for myself. >> cepeda received a hero's welcome back in his home country, something that meant the world to him. >> puerto rico was kind of hard on me, and now everything is erased. everything is beautiful. >> that same year, the giants showed cepeda plenty of love as well when he became the fourth san francisco giant to have his number retired at a ceremony at candlestick park. and a decade later, he would be one of five giants to be honored with a statue at at&t park. >> i want to say thank you to san francisco, to the bay area who support me 100. >> in 2018, he suffered a stroke

and head injuries and was in a medically induced coma for several days. but months later, he was back at the ballpark attending a giants game, saying returning felt like coming home. cepeda was 86 years old.

check, the boulder view fire has burned 3700 acres and there is no containment. nearly three firefighters were on the front lines today as they tried to contain the flames amid triple digit temperatures and gusty winds. a local ranch shared video of their animals being evacuated as flames burned in the distance, and it is an all hands on deck effort to help the livestock escape the fire. >> we had a bunch of horses evacuated here last night. we also have four pigs, 16 chickens and a variety of other animals. it's been extremely busy. people are afraid. >> so far there are no reports of any injuries or structures burned. fire officials and medical experts nationwide are urging people to take precautions around fireworks this 4th of july. fox two cb cotton has more from new york. >> as we gear up for 4th of july celebrations, medical experts and fire officials are urging some precautions. every year, fireworks lead to thousands of people getting hurt, almost half

of them children, while 38% of the people that have addressed their issues in a hospital have had, ears or hands, issues with hands, whether it's getting blown off or partway blown off. according to data from the us consumer product safety commission last year, eight people died from firework related injuries. overall, nearly 10,000 were hurt. about 700 of those injuries coming from sparklers, which are often falsely believed to be safe for kids. it doesn't take much to catch the clothing on fire. >> or if i put that up, the scam where second third degree burns immediately. >> so how do you stay safe? experts say it's best to leave the flashy light displays to the professionals, but if you do decide to handle fireworks, be smart about it. check with your local fire and police departments on what is legal in your area. keep a fire extinguisher and bucket of water close by. be sure to ignite fireworks in an open area and never anywhere near dry leaves

installation had searchlights beaming at the top of the triangle on friday evening. and that's in addition to the 4.1 mile long rainbow laser above market street. officials with the organization that installs, maintains the project calls the pink triangle and the rainbow flag the yin yang of gay rights. symbols since the triangle was tragically created during the holocaust and the flag was created out of love, hope, and optimism, workers at one san francisco bookstore are involved in a special project that began long before this weekend. the owner of the store on castro street founded a program called books not bands. it's part of her effort to make sure all books remain available on store shelves, and owner becca robbins has been shipping donated books to conservative u.s. states where many books have been banned from schools and libraries. >> i'm not a legislator. i'm not a lawyer. i'm not able to go to school board meetings in florida or texas, but i can pack boxes and i can do outreach. i can

find places where these books are needed, and i can ship them. >> many of the banned books in florida and texas include lgbtq plus characters or themes. a subway station near the historic stonewall inn in new york has been renamed to honor the location's importance to the lgbtq plus rights movement. a local senator shared the unveiling of the christopher street stonewall station in the city's west village on friday afternoon. the station is adjacent to the stonewall inn, where 55 years ago, people fought back against the regular police raids at the gay bars. the growing uprising lasted several days, involving hundreds of people at the time, it was illegal for gay people to be served alcohol or to even dance with people of the same sex. san francisco botanical garden was partially closed today when a coyote made it onto the grounds. the park's website states that coyote incident forced the western half of the garden to close out of an abundance of caution. it's unclear what happened during the coyote encounter, but there were unconfirmed reports it involved

a child, anyone with tickets to the garden scheduled for today can request a full refund. back in 2021, a coyote was euthanized after charging at toddlers at this same park. a bear has been spotted in sonoma county preserve park for the first time ever. the county park department shared this video of a single bear walking through the mark. west park on may 19th. this is the first time one was spotted at the mark west park and preserve. it left behind some scat, some dna, which will undergo some analysis revealing more about the bear's diet, genetic relationships and even home range size. well, india beat south africa in the world cup cricket final this morning, and the bay area's biggest cricket fans watched together, hoping to add to their fan base. ktvu amanda quintana has more from fremont. >> hundreds watched as india beat south africa in the world cup finals, gathered on the soccer field at ohlone college. every seat was full and families
